DRUNK025 – Kahn – Illy / Tehran

After his excellent debut earlier this year Bristol based producer Khan returns for his second outing on the Punch Drunk label with the latest 12” in the series; Illy/Tehran. A pair of heavy hitting, yet intricate works that really outline the level of talent Kahn’s putting out. After having just a handful of releases on labels Punch Drunk, Box clever and a future without; he’s shown his capabilities as a producer and they’ve been very well received by many corners of the music community due to his music capturing many different elements from different genres. it’s clear there’s great deal of thought that goes into Khans works ; every release continuing to sound distinctive, different and interesting as the last. First up on the 12” is A side ‘’Illy’’, a synth driven number with heavy stepping percussion that successfully bridges the gap between emotive and grimy sounds. No messing about it kicks straight off with that luscious synth chord hook and mesmerizing vocals there’s. The percussive elements are hard hitting yet have a degree of subtlety about them; acting as the backbone of the track whilst the hypnotic grime-sounding synths ring above, then switching back up to the main synth hook and vocals gives the song a really solid feeling of progressiveness throughout. This is four and a half minutes of melodic Kahn goodness. On the B side we have ‘’Tehran’’, a low end heavy roller with middle-eastern vibe flowing throughout. Large 808 hits propel this one whilst the clever, catchy use of the vocal samples gives it a distinct desert feel. Heavy stepping percussion again; big kicks, big snares; think the Sahara desert meets Bristol dubstep. This one’s suited to the dance floor and makes a lot of sense when heard on a system. More quality output from Kahn and yet more quality coming from the Punch Drunk Label. Another stomper of a release from Kahn and another quality outing from punch drunk that goes to show there’s a whole lot more to come from this very talented individual. Charlie Davis-Miller
