Having crept out of the shadows of Bristol's underground, Spiritflesh should need no introduction to anyone who's been following the output of the NoCorner imprint in recent time.
Their Menace 12", released a few months back, was a good introduction to their sound -
a righteous, versatile record in itself.
This album however, is the central piece of the whole build up...
Somewhere between the suffocating heaviness of Sunnn O))), the outernational rhythms of Muslimgauze, and the mystery of a good Basic Channel record, Spiritflesh combine attributes of the aforementioned, together with the slamming drums, synth-pop, disco and post punk stylings of DJ October, versus the hardcore atmospherics and canorous harmonics heard in Borai's output.
Their self-titled LP provides a depth charge across eight extended pieces, kicking off with the no compromise, crushing dirge of the opening track 'Crib.
Sensory overload is the order of the day, and there is no alternative once you loose yourself in the post-apocalyptic juju percussions and techno meditations of ensuing tracks such as 'Deity' and 'Beneath The Clouded Veil'... Hypnotic grooves provide an underbelly to the shifting sands of time, just out of perception's reach... A few tracks in, and it feels like we've entered an endless wormhole of drones and dizzying atmospherics, submerging and letting off only once we reach the vast, weightless sermon at the end of the final cut... Aptly titled 'Nothing Will Ever Be The Same Again',
Bird sound, tropical rain, lulling chord sequences and mechanised voices act like a DMT trip into the spirit world of the animal kingdom, a non-physical journey with the silent rulers of the earth, watching the fast rise and slow demise of us humans, as we steer towards our final chapter.
By no means a lightweight debut, their LP is a full-on, detail rich experience, meticulously put together in Bristol's most infamous basement studio, each sound sent through a time tunnel of machines and production technique. A masterfully executed capsule of sonic intent.
Two years in the making and finally ready to be out in the world, it feels - to us at least - like a timeless record already.
First copies, served on 180gsm vinyl with a two-colour screenprint design by Studio Tape-Echo, will be available online via RwdFwd and in-store at Idle Hands this Wednesday, the 19th of September, at 7pm...
